A friend asked me to help her put up her new shades to replace the old ones. She assumed I would be able to put the new ones up the next evening, so she took the old ones down the next morning. Then something came up and I wasn't able to put up the new shades.

At this time of year thoughts turn to warmer weather, baseball, and the IRS. Yes folks, April 15th is right around the corner.
During this year’s tax season, keep these hints in mind:
-
If you only have ONE W-2 and are not reporting any taxable interest or dividends, file electronically. You’ll save paper, save the price of a stamp and save time. This option is great if you’re receiving a refund, because the payment can automatically be deposited to your bank. And it’s usually a FREE service! Imagine that, free stuff from the IRS!
For those with IRA’s, the deadline for contributions is April 15th. But according to Investopedia.com, a postmark date is considered timely. If your contribution is in the mail by April 15th, you’ve met the deadline!
The EITC or Earned Income Tax Credit is not just for single individuals with children. To see if you qualify, visit irs.gov/individuals.
If you think you’ll need a little more time to prepare your return, file for an extension. You may be eligible to receive an additional 6 months to file your return.

In the two decades since its inception, Holdcom has been a leader in audio marketing, specializing in Message-On-Hold and Voice Production for telephony call processing applications. The range of its production services has expanded along with the Internet and other rich-media venues, such as PowerPoint, Flash presentations, and more recently web-based streaming audio for Virtual Tours and Avatars. Globalization has fueled the demand for foreign languages and created a profound impact on the diversity and scope of Holdcom’s voice talent roster, which continues to expand to accommodate the requirements of multi-national enterprise.
One website audio project for worldlottery.com required SitePal avatar announcements in Cantonese, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish.
Since virtual technologies have broken down the traditional boundaries and barriers once associated with doing business internationally, Holdcom has been fulfilling a growing number of multi-lingual requests, beyond the common Asian and European languages. Some projects have required languages as diverse and “exotic” as Urdu, Tagalog, Bengali, Creole, Vietnamese and Angolan Portuguese.

20th Anniversary Feature article by Andrew Begnoche`
I recently sat down with owners Harvey Edelman & Neil Fishman to discuss their 20th anniversary and the journey that brought them from the Great White Way to their ownership of an innovative audio marketing business.
Act 1
Although they both grew up in New Jersey, only a couple of towns and years apart, Neil Fishman & Harvey Edelman would have to wait until they were out of college before their paths would cross. “It was a mutual friend that brought us together to write an original theatrical musical in the mid 70’s,” Edelman recalls. “Little did we know at that time where it would all lead.”
After that musical was produced locally to promising reviews, their creative chemistry kept them working together as a songwriting team. Edelman worked the pen, while Fishman provided the melody. Before long the two were making beautiful music together, literally. They continued to collaborate on other projects including an off Broadway run of “On The Air”, a musical comedy based on the Golden Age of Radio. Continued success found them sipping champagne one night at Sardi’s as they celebrated what was going to be their biggest break, bringing Sidney Kingsley’s “Dead End” to Broadway. The title of that project became an ironic metaphor for a new road the project ultimately went down, when the rights to the original play (a prerequisite to open on Broadway) were retracted.
While writing and producing scripts and scores for musical theatre, the team began writing and producing marketing programs for a variety of clients including the national Head Start program, Parents Magazine, BMW, General Electric, Colgate Palmolive and Grey Advertising, to name a few.
“It was a very exciting time,” recalls Fishman. We were young, working in the city and we were part of this new digital music technology that was just starting to emerge in the early 80’s. We made a huge investment in a Synclavier, the first computer music instrument of its kind. We were one of a handful of people using this cutting edge technology, including the likes of Sting, Paul Simon, and Ashford & Simpson.”
As the years ticked away and the bright lights of Broadway seemed to be fading in the distance, a time came when a change of direction was in order. “It was right after my first child was born and my first mortgage payment was due that my mantra became, ‘We need a steady income,’" remembers Fishman.
Act 2
While working from a temporary sublet in a business office, they hit upon the idea of providing businesses with customized phone messages that would promote products and services to customers waiting on hold. The idea came to them when a friend walked into their office one day and mentioned he had just heard something new: a pre-recorded voice talking to him while he was waiting on hold on the phone.
“When we first started, we figured we’d write an original song for every client, to put a real branding stamp on everything,” Edelman recollects. “I can’t imagine if we were still doing that today with over 12,000 clients”. Fishman continues, “We quickly realized original music wasn’t necessary, and to market this service to as many businesses as possible, it had to be affordable. After all these years, it still yields a high impact for a small investment.”
They started the company as Promotions On Hold, but in March of 1988 they incorporated as On Hold Productions (later changed to Creative Audio Enterprises, Inc. doing business as HOLDCOM). After signing up their friends and family members, the two set their sights on new business. While still a fledgling operation, Fishman recalls being on hold in "dead silence" with New Jersey Transit for what seemed like an eternity. “I started thinking about how many other NJT callers were waiting on hold, and then started wondering about all the other companies that had customers waiting on hold. I knew this was going to be something that businesses AND callers were going to welcome. It was that frustrating "on hold" experience with NJT that set them in my sights as one of my primary prospect targets. And they are still using our services today!”
With Neil recording and mixing the programs, Harvey focused on the scripting. They both handled sales. “When we first started we didn’t have fax machines and email," remembers Edelman. "I would type a script, put it in an envelope, and mail it to the customer and wait for them to call several days later with their changes or approval. Technology has been very kind to us. We can now receive an order from another country, send the script to one of our voice talents completely on the other side of the world, have it recorded in a foreign language, and send it back to the customer...within the same day!”
Act 3
When asked what’s next for the team and if they miss their musical theater days, they share similar views. “I love music and composing," states Fishman, "but I’m really excited about the business that we’ve created. We have over 20 employees and thousands of clients and we provide a product and service that we all believe in. I couldn’t still be doing this if I didn’t enjoy and believe in it.” “Neil’s right," agrees Edelman. "After all this time we still come to work excited. We continue to find new and innovative ways to apply audio marketing, fulfill our customers' needs, and grow our business.”
Recently the pair worked on a new musical called “Nightlights” – based on the true story of a Montana town whose residents unite to fight ethnic and racial hatred. “It’s a very special story and I love the music we wrote for it,” comments Fishman. Thwarted again, however, due to creative differences with a third collaborator on the project, Edelman jokes, “I guess somebody up there just wants us to be in the Audio Marketing business.”
Epilogue: One of Holdcom's newest Message-On-Hold accounts is The Rogers & Hammerstein Organization! Go figure!

HOLDCOM has proudly provided Voice Prompt and Message-On-Hold services to our March Client of the Month: kStyle. Up and coming as an internet based retailer, kStyle is a boutique type retailer that sells jewelry, purses, stationary, and custom stamps at competitive prices… holding the kStyle Lowest Price Promise seal.
What has helped kStyle grow in its industry is the foundation of providing top-notch customer service. To effectively communicate with their customers, kStyle believes in providing a full American based team, quality voice prompts, and proficient employees creating an unbeatable team.
Brett Kusman, Operations Manager, explains that when kStyle was looking for professional voice services and found HOLDCOM online, it was “a dream come true. Great Talent! Great Prices! Great Services! Who could ask for more?”.
kStyle customers absolutely love the Message-On-Hold as well. In addition to inquiring about additional products and services, callers have even been known to ask for a copy of the music for their own listening pleasure, according to Kusman.
Since customer service is so important to Kusman and his team, they appreciate the monitoring services provided by HOLDCOM. “HOLDCOM checks up on us once in a while to make sure that we are liking our voice prompts; they even informed me of a volume problem on our PBX system that our Message-On-Hold was louder than the actual voice prompts,” states Kusman. He continues expressing his satisfaction by saying, “HOLDCOM has unbeatable prices, unbeatable support, and unbeatable quality, which will always make it our first choice for voice recordings!”
“From this day, HOLDCOM is an Icon on my screen for my desktop and laptop, saved under favorites; the customer service number is on my cell phone, and just in case, I laminated and taped Holdcom’s website and phone number to my desk,” explains Kusman.
Congratulations to kStyle on being HOLDCOM’s March 2008 Client of the Month!

Pending initiatives by the Federal Government’s Medicare program in the area of healthcare patient satisfaction, emphasize the need for an improved patient assessment system. CareOne Corp., a HOLDCOM client since 2002, has met this challenge by developing Care-Ensure, a real-time patient satisfaction assessment system. In an effort to boost Care-Ensure’s effectiveness, CareOne Corp. sought out the experience and expertise of HOLDCOM to assist in optimizing their patient satisfaction survey responses.
In serving the hospital industry for over 15 years, CareOne Corp. credits a share of their success to HOLDCOM for its ability to quickly produce high quality voice productions. CareOne Corp. has also used HOLDCOM’s voice files to assist hospital patients through an automated billing system for in-room TV and telephone rental service.
Patient satisfaction is currently determined by a survey (HCAHPS) that is taken by the patient after leaving the hospital. If patients leave dissatisfied, they tend to fill out their survey negatively, and are very likely to perpetuate negativity to others.
In March of 2008, HCAHPS patient satisfaction survey results will be available for public review. At some point in the not too distant future, the consensus is that hospital Medicare reimbursements will be directly impacted by its HCAHPS patient satisfaction ratings. Therefore, it has become imperative for hospitals to discover and resolve their patients’ complaints before the patients are discharged. Care-Ensure is the solution - immediately identifying, and addressing, the dissatisfied patients’concerns prior to the patients being discharged.
One of the first hospitals to implement Care-Ensure was Saint Barnabas Medical Center, one of HOLDCOM’s many on-hold messaging customers.
The Care-Ensure demo line, (800) 561-6943, features Lisa, one of HOLDCOM’s top notch voice talents.
For further Care-Ensure information, please contact Dave Penrod at (937) 684-1682.
Congratulations Care-Ensure on being HOLDCOM’s March 2008 Partner of the Month!

Five years ago, David – our authentic British Voice Over Talent - moved from the production side of the microphone to the recording side and hasn’t looked back. But The HOLDCOM Voice would like to take this opportunity to shine the spotlight on the path of his endeavors.
David learned his trade in front of a microphone with an EMI recording contract. He went on to form London’s leading Music Production Company and a five-studio recording complex - servicing the Advertising and TV & Radio Production industries.
David spent many years on the 'other side of the glass' producing singers and voice over talents. He was often asked why he did not do the job himself because of his voice. So he did! And, five enjoyable years later… well, what a way to earn a living!
“You never know what the day is going to bring – a new script that could be to impersonate a garden gnome or a gravitas reading for a worthy charity,” explains David regarding the most interesting aspect of being a Voice Over Talent. “No job is the same and no client is the same. The variety and excitement of each new job is what makes the work interesting and enjoyable.”
David began working as a Voice Over for HOLDCOM “on the off chance.” He sent his show reel to Neil Fishman who said ‘he enjoyed it’ - and then added David to the HOLDCOM voice talent roster.
In his spare time, David is an ultra runner (ultra being any distance beyond marathon). David has done races of 150 miles or more in Morocco, Mauritania, Jordan, Himalayas, and last year in Niger (see photo). Some are non-stop through the desert.
The turning point for David’s voice over career was when he took on an agent. Since then, he has not stopped working and enjoys knowing that his voice is now heard all over the world on commercials, documentaries, and the web.

HOLDCOM Joins Generation Blog! |

|
|
|
|
|
|
Have you ever wondered how the word “blog” originated? According to Wikipedia, the word “blog” is derived from two words… "web log”. After some creative letter spacing, the phrase “we blog” was created and then finally, the “blog” was born.
Blogs are short write-ups on a particular subject and are a great way to reach a broader audience, by sharing information over the internet. Whether you’re an aspiring writer, political underdog, or neighborhood soccer mom, the blog is an effective tool in communicating thoughts and ideas and invites readers into an interactive forum.
Recently, HOLDCOM created its own blog and we’ve enlisted the creative talents of our own team to fill the virtual volumes. With topics ranging from telecommuting, music, Message-On-Hold, and motherhood, the HOLDCOM blog has been active since May 2007.
In an effort to get our team involved, a truly unique incentive program was put into play. When a HOLDCOM team member submits a blog, they are invited to lunch or “blunch” as it was appropriately renamed. In addition to the “blunch”, our writers are entered into a raffle for special prizes. Oh and yes, we renamed the raffle as “blaffle”.
We invite all our newsletter readers to become blog readers. Grow your business and your mind. Benefit from our years of experience, wit, and wisdom.
