"Write" Rules

There are so many words and phrases in the English language that are often misused but unfortunately accepted. We’re hoping to shed some light on a few of those over the course of the next few months in The Holdccom Voice.

In regard to Advance versus Advanced - which is correct in the following examples?
“Advance notice” or “Advanced notice”?
“Advance preparation” or “Advanced preparation”?

If you chose “Advance” for instances such as these, then you’re correct!

The word “Advanced” has nothing to do with preceding anything. It should be used when referring to something that is complex or sophisticated. For example: “Advanced medical technology”.

Hope these simple tips can help you in your day-to-day communication as well as your upcoming Voice Prompts and Message-On-Hold programs.

Hooray For Handwashing
Top

By Neil Fishman

You may recall an article from a previous edition of The Holdcom Voice about founders Harvey Edelman and Neil Fishman, which in part described their pre-Holdcom career as creative songwriters for musical theater. While “in between” shows, they would write and produce for a variety of venues, including jingles for radio and television, industrials, soundtracks, and original songs for dance troupes, recording artists, and associations like Macmillan Publishing and Head Start. One such assignment called for the composition and production of three songs and a soundtrack for The Soap and Detergent Association’s (SDA) “Hooray for Handwashing” project. This multi-media presentation encouraged pre-school children to maintain healthy hygiene by carefully following the why, when and how of handwashing. The goal was to utilize song, storytelling and artwork to influence behavior and improve compliance by turning handwashing into a fun activity. Lyrics had to include all the specific rules and instructions for effective handwashing, and the music had to be memorable and melodic… easy for children to learn and sing. Titles were carefully selected to capture the “hook” and main message of each song: “It’s Fun To Scrub”, “Remember” and “Look At Me”.

Recently, the SDA contacted our publishing company (Sammy Smile Music) to discuss digitizing the "Hooray For Handwashing" materials for a data CD and website applications (www.cleaning101.com). Holdcom digitized the audio (as .mp3 files) from original analog masters and combined them with scanned images (.pdf files) of the storybook, coloring book and sheet music on a data CD for distribution. We also designed the CD label using images from the original artwork, and even provided in-house duplication.

As Neil commented, “Revisiting a project from our past was a nostalgic process. And being able to transform it into a more viable format for contemporary kids was a fulfilling accomplishment.” Harvey chimed in to remind Holdcom customers, “As an audio marketing company with a full suite of sound solutions, Holdcom’s production capabilities and scope extend beyond its Message-On-Hold and Voice Production services.”

Washing your hands is vital to good health. If you like to sing in the shower, try singing at the sink with some new tunes at: www.cleaning101.org.

Cancer Prevention Study 3

by Stacey Caropreso Top

HOLDCOM will be participating in The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life on May 16th-17th, at the Glen Rock High School. In addition to raising much-needed funds and awareness to eliminate cancer, The American Cancer Society is looking for Cancer Prevention Study participants to play a direct role in improving the lives of future generations.

The Society will be signing up volunteers for its Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3) at the Glen Rock Relay For Life on May 16th from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Glen Rock High School. Please note, you do NOT need to be participating in the walk to enroll for the study. The study, which will enroll a diverse population of half a million people across the United States, will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, and will further efforts to eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations.

CPS-3 participants must be between the ages of 30 and 65, must never have been diagnosed with cancer, and must be willing to make a long-term commitment to the study. They will be asked to complete a brief written survey, provide a waist measurement, and give a small blood sample at the enrollment site. After that, follow-up surveys will be sent to participants’ homes on a regular basis over the next few decades to update health behavior information.

Researchers will use the data from the Cancer Prevention Study to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteer participants. The Hammond-Horn Study and previous Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS-1 and CPS-2) have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific literature and to the development of public health guidelines and recommendations. Those studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, showed that obesity increases the risk of several cancers, and linked aspirin use to a lower death rate from colon cancer. The current study, CPS-II, began in 1982 and is still ongoing. But changes in lifestyle and in the understanding of cancer in the more than two decades since its launch make it important to begin a new cohort.

The Glen Rock Relay For Life will be one of 16 sites throughout New York and New Jersey where individuals can enroll in the study this year, and will be the only time the Cancer Prevention Study will be enrolling in Glen Rock this year. The Society asks the community to find the 25th hour in their day to enroll in the study and fight back against cancer. Initial enrollment will take 20 to 30 minutes, and the study is expected to produce benefits for decades to come.

For more information or to learn how to become involved, contact Stacey Caropreso or visit www.cancer.org/cps3.

Freezer Hints
by Megan Andriulli Top

This month’s Eco Tip is yet another small step you can take that can yield a BIG impact.

A full freezer and/or refrigerator runs less often than an empty or partially full one. If yours is not full that often or you’re between big food shopping trips, fill a few empty juice bottles with water and toss them in the freezer to take up the unused space - the fridge will come on less often.

You can also raise the temperature on both the fridge and the freezer – this will also cause the unit to run less often, but the food will still remain cold and frozen respectively.

These simple steps will save money and electricity, prolong the life of the appliance, and keep your household that much quieter by not having your fridge turn on.

Voice Over Spotlight
Top

HOLDCOM’s Voice Talent roster offers a variety of talents and although the voice choices are abundant, we pride ourselves on offering only professional talents. Case in point is April’s featured Voices: Randye.

HOLDCOM Voice: How did you get into voice over work?
Randye: When I was pregnant with my first child, I wanted to find a way to keep working as an actress while accommodating my growing belly (limited visual casting opportunities there!). Voice-over work was the perfect solution, and I’ve been behind the microphone ever since (right through my second pregnancy 3 years later, and beyond!).

HV: How long have you been working as a voice over?
Randye: Well my son is 26 years old, so…between voice-overs and my years in radio (PM and AM drive, and now occasional fill-in), it’s been a wonderful, and varied, work life.

HV: With so many years of experience, what is the most exciting/interesting aspect of working as a voice over talent?
Randye: I love bringing words to life, taking anything from informative copy like telephony and narrations to the comedy and drama of commercials, audiobooks, video games, etc. and adding my voice to the writer’s words so we can tell the story. Plus, I love the people in this business!

HV: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us Randye. At this point, is there anything unique about yourself and/or any career highlights that you’d like to mention?
Randye: I’m still a stage actress and singer, and perform when my schedule permits on both Connecticut and New York stages. I’m also a motivational speaker, Corporate MC, Diversity Trainer for the Anti-Defamation League, and the author of a memoir, "No Casseroles for Schizophrenia: and Other Lessons a Family Learns on the Journey to Acceptance", currently being presented to publishers by my literary agent (Dunham Literary in NYC). I voice a lot of medical narrations as a result of my work with families affected by mental illness. I’m a member of Mensa, too!

Partner of the Month: Circuitnet
by Megan Andriulli Top

Every business day, the professionals at Circuitnet dig through the daily unending stream of news, articles, and features published around the globe in order to create and publish two popular industry email newsletters reaching over 80,000 industry professionals.

Certain features within this daily broadcast will then link recipients to Circuitmart. Circuitmart brings the rich experience of audio and video to the world of electronics manufacturing and assembly. Their roster of industry gurus and experts offers their unique perspectives on the worldwide electronics assembly marketplace. The sights and sounds you'll see and hear at Circuitmart are designed for business professionals who have a need to know -- and who bear the responsibility of looking ahead, thinking, imagining the future, and preparing for it.

And the sounds of Circuitmart are provided by HOLDCOM's professional voice talents.

Jeff Ferry, Publisher at Circuitnet/Circuitmart, explains that the audio and visual features provided at Circuitmart deliver “powerful branding” for their clients. “You can’t make a better impression on a client than with audio,” states Ferry. He feels that the professional audio that HOLDCOM provides to the visual aspect of Circuitmart far exceeds any text ads.

In addition, before each feature plays there is a brief commercial that is randomly cycled in. You could visit a feature a few times in one sitting, and different commercials may play each time – a great advertising deal for his clients.

Ferry also mentioned that Circuitmart is very good at Google-Ranking. Their features often receive top-ranking to guarantee traffic.

If you could spend time visiting every online magazine and web site covering the electronics assembly market you might be better informed, but it's time-consuming to visit them all. Ferry invites you to spend just a few minutes once each week at Circuitmart, and you'll gain insight and perspective you simply will not find anywhere else.
