Does your company have a dress code? While the “suit and tie” requirement is slowly fading, 70% of people we polled said their office is Business Causal. Only 15% said their office still requires a more formal setting. The remaining 15% had no dress code in place. Thanks to all who participated!

Happy Holidays everyone!
OK so this month’s tip doesn’t have much to do with the holidays per se but if you’re looking to update your message-on-hold program for the New Year & will be featuring an updated or newly launched website, then this tip is perfect for you… it’s also just good to know!
Slash Vs. Backslash
This symbol is a slash: /. Because the top of it leans forward, it is sometimes referred to as a “forward slash.”
This is a backslash: \. Since the top leans back, it is distinguished from the regular slash.
IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: Websites do NOT contain backslashes. If a / symbol appears in a website, it should be pronounced as "slash" or "forward slash"… never as “backslash”.

HOLDCOM ushered in the Holiday Season with a special Monday morning Staff Meeting & Holiday “Kickoff” Breakfast on October 27th. In addition to starting off the workweek with a potpourri of hearty helpings, the festive food fest provided an opportunity to revisit Holdcom’s Vision and Core Values and discuss new goals and initiatives for the Holiday Season and beyond.
Featured on the menu were Andy Begnoche’s scrumptious made-to-order golden brown Waffles, Stacey Caropreso’s homemade assortment of fluffy Quiche Pies, and Neil Fishman’s special brand of cinnamon laced Challah French Toast! Assorted cereals and fruits were also served, along with fresh juices and coffee.
Over the past 20 years Holdcom has evolved from a single product, Message-On-Hold company to an Audio Marketing enterprise that serves thousands of businesses with a full range of audio solutions. Technology, complemented by our commitment to innovation and customer service, has been a major catalyst in the expansion of our products and services, and has fueled the continuous growth of our global client base. There’s a pretty popular email forward making its way to inboxes regarding purchasing gift cards from stores that will be closing soon after the holidays. From popular electronic chains and linen supply stores to jewelry and toy stores, and many more, the old adage, “buyer beware” has never been truer.
If you are purchasing gift cards this holiday season, ask the sales representative if they will be honoring them after the holidays. They MUST tell you… so be certain to verify. There is no law preventing stores from selling gift cards that may not be valid after January 1st. In fact, this procedure is referred to as Bankruptcy Planning.
Safe shopping! |

It's About Life - Join Us for the 4th Annual Blood Drive |

Next month, the Blood Mobile returns to HOLDCOM! Once again, HOLDCOM is supporting Community Blood Services and the Paramus NJ Blood Bank, in our 4th Annual Blood Drive.
On Wednesday January 21st, the Blood Mobile will roll up to our offices at 955 Lincoln Avenue in Glen Rock NJ and eligible members of the HOLDCOM team will give the gift of life with their blood donations. In addition, we’re reaching out to our friends and neighbors for extra support. Not only is the life saving aspect a great incentive to give blood, but this year, HOLDCOM will make it fun as well. For every eligible donor who comes to give blood, we’ll enter his or her name in a drawing for a chance to win an mp3 player. So bring a friend and double your chances!
Blood is often taken for granted…we all expect it to be there all the time. But only a fraction of those who are eligible to give blood, don’t. If you are over the age of 16, weigh over 110 pounds and in good health, you can donate blood. HOLDCOM has recognized the need and urgency and we ask you to help us this year.
Not in the Glen Rock area? Not a problem! Simply visit www.RedCross.org and find out how you can donate blood in your neighborhood or city. You can also call 1-800-GIVE LIFE.
Remember, it’s all about life…life shared, life saved.

Last but definitely not least to be featured in 2008 is HOLDCOM’s Voiceover Talent: RACHEL!
HOLDCOM Voice: How did you get into voice over work?
Rachel: I started my career as a promotions intern at 97.9 The Loop in Chicago, thinking I eventually wanted to be a D.J. Fast forward a year later, and I was bored out of my mind sitting behind a mic talking about Styx. One day, out of nowhere, the voice guy for the station I worked for asked me why in the world I wasn’t doing voiceovers and production - and the light bulb went off. I’ve been building my career as a voiceover artist ever since, and I love every single minute of it!
HV: What is the most exciting/interesting aspect of working as a voice over talent?
Rachel: Wow, there are so many things I adore about my job. I think one thing is the whole “theater of the mind” part of it -- it’s great when I get an acting role and I get to become whoever it is I’m playing, from a southern pickle-eating contest winner to a ditsy game show host assistant. And, when a client is REALLY happy with the voice I’ve given to their business, I get genuinely giddy – it’s a phenomenal feeling.
HV: And outside of working as a Voice Talent is there anything unique you’d like to share about yourself with our readers?
Rachel: In addition to being a voiceover artist, I’m also a producer and a writer. Being able to do all three has opened the door to many opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise had. Oh, and there’s this… when I was 18, I decided that I was from another planet – no, really- it’s called “Planet Nomenal”, a derivative of the word “phenomenal”. There, everyone is always in a fabulous mood, and everyone has a pink Lamborghini (my dream car). The sun is always shining, and laughter is heard everywhere. It’s a pretty fun place. Hey, I’m one of those “creative types”, did you really expect this answer to be normal?
HV: Any career highlights you’d like to mention?
Rachel: I don’t want to give you a boring laundry list of all my accomplishments - let’s just say that I’ve achieved a lot of success in a very short amount of time, and I couldn’t be more thankful to the MANY talented people who have helped me along the way.
Sample Rachel’s voice at www.holdcom.com/voices and consider her for your next project! |

This December, Holdcom is proud to congratulate Littleton Coin Company – one of the world’s largest buyers and sellers of coins and paper money – as our “Client of the Month”. Led by President David Sundman, the company employs more than 320 local residents and is renowned for providing friendly, reliable, and expert service to collectors.
Rose Crosby, Manager of Customer Service, had the following to say about the positive impact Message-On-Hold grants her company: “Our on hold program has been a great benefit to our customers. It gives them the opportunity to hear about some of our most recent and interesting products that they may not have seen in our catalog or on our website. It’s a win for them to be able to add these products to their collection and a win for the company to be able to sell them. We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, so we have very short hold times and we’re very picky about the messaging our customers hear. Holdcom’s services have enabled us to provide relevant information quickly and efficiently.”
Littleton Coin - proud to be a family owned business - has been helping people enjoy collecting since 1945. Interested in learning more about the company? Just visit their website at www.LittletonCoin.com.

Be As Green As Your Tree…
Maintain your green state of mind while you spend your hard-earned green cash this holiday season with these few simple tips:
1. Don’t take a bag from every store where you make a purchase – load a few items into one.
2. Use 100% recycled wrapping paper.
3. Recycle wrapping paper after gifts are open or don’t rip through the paper so you can reuse it next year.
4. Consider using the Sunday comics or brown paper bags that can be decorated as wrapping paper.
5. Call your town to find out how your tree can be recycled.
6. Invest in an artificial tree – many are now pre-lit. Imagine that: not having to struggle with tangled strands of lights!
7. How about purchasing a balled tree to be planted outside? Evergreens planted on the north side of a house help reduce heating costs by cutting down the effects of a cold northern wind when the trees mature.
8. Think lasting, not disposable when it comes to your decorations and party supply goods. Invest in cloth napkins and tablecloths that perhaps could become family heirlooms.
9. Remember, baking is THE best air freshener – much more rewarding than aerosol sprays and non-edible candles!

Stretching Your Holiday Dollars |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Holiday shopping always offers up a series of challenges…the crowds, the sales, the malls, the traffic, the parking and this year, the economy. With such dire financial news, how can you make the most of your dollar this holiday season?
Retailers are hoping for a good season, especially since they started their “Black Friday” sales a week before Thanksgiving.
I’m not a financial whiz kid, but here are some simple rules I follow when I execute my holiday shopping game plan.
1. Research EVERYTHING you plan on buying. Don’t buy at the first price you see. Do some comparison-shopping, especially for big-ticket items, like electronics. Keep in mind that prices may drop, as you get closer to the holidays.
2. Save on shipping! Online retailers offer shipping specials for bundled items. Check their web sites for specials or announcements.
3. For Video Games fanatics and their parents, check with specialty stores for used games. While Store A may have a brand new game, Store B may have the same game, gently used and at a lower price. Your local Video Rental Stores also carry video games, so check there as well.
4. Coupons are a great recipe for your holiday feast. Clip away and save some extra “dough” this year.
5. Another shopping tip: If you LIVE near a retailer, check to see if the item is in stock. Purchase it online and arrange to pick it up at the store. You may need to maneuver through some traffic, but it’ll save you some cash, especially for electronics like televisions or computers.
6. Don’t spend over your means and try to use cash as much as possible. Once this financial crisis ends, you’ll have one of your own to deal with if credit card bills are mounting, due to holiday purchases.
After all is said and done, the holidays are much more than shopping and money and credit and traffic and the economy. It’s a time for family and friends, and you can’t put a price tag on that. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Featured Vendor – Integrated Document Technologies |

Did you ever purchase something and the more you used it, the happier you were that you bought it? That’s exactly how we felt this summer when we upgraded to our new copier. Now a copier sounds like a minor piece of office equipment. Almost antiquated, by today’s standards. But our new Xerox just keeps getting better and better.
Let me take you back in time before digital copiers were the de facto standard. About 12 years ago, we had a few different copiers that seemed to be broken more often than they worked. Our copier repairman was a fixture in our office. He was like Norm on Cheers. (I think he even had his own coffee cup in our kitchenette cupboard.) At that time, we were using our copier quite a bit for printing price lists and direct mailings. Our frustration was growing and somewhere along the way, someone suggested we check out Xerox. A call to an 800 number in the phone book (yeah remember those) led us to a local reseller (Liz Perillo with Integrated Document Technologies) who was number one in sales for our area. I’ll spare you the details of our “honeymoon” with Liz, but she analyzed our needs, and got us on track with our first digital copier.
Now tens of thousands of copies, and several copier models later, fast forward to the end of this summer and it was time to upgrade our copier. How much could this technology have changed in the last 12 years? We’d been totally satisfied with all the models we’ve had. We didn’t even recognize the repairman when he came in to do a complimentary cleaning and service call. We’ve been so busy pounding our chests about the internet and email, what could possible get us excited about this device from the digital stone age?
Like so many things we all buy, we were only utilizing about one tenth of the features that existed on the current system. So we brought in the IT guys and let them go under the hood to see what we could do with our new copier. It didn’t take long before they had networked it as a printer, set it up to send and receive faxes as digital emails, and were scanning contracts for archiving into pdf files.
Now users can even reduce or enlarge documents they want to print right from their desktop. Or choose to print a brochure as a booklet and the copier will figure it all out. With multiple users sending “jobs” to the copier at the same time via the network interface, the copier simply prioritizes the tasks and completes them in the most efficient order. The copier even emails weekly status reports as to how it is operating.
We would all like to send our sincere thanks to Liz and her team at Integrated Document Technologies (also, a loyal HOLDCOM customer since 1998). Check them out on line at www.idtofficesolutions.com or call them at 973-237-1200.
