With the holiday season upon us, now is a great time to freshen up your Message-On-Hold program. Keep the following tip in mind when revisiting your script:

Know your callers. Your Message-On-Hold program should be informative, interesting, and – in appropriate cases – entertaining to your callers. The more you can inform your HOLDCOM Script Consultant about your average caller and the general nature of your calls, the more we’ll be able to devise a script that will achieve your objectives.

Great American Smokeout
Top

by Joe Pietsch
In my quest to free myself from the ball and chain that is smoking, I’ve sought help from patches, gum, lozenges and the like. I’ve even gone through hypnosis, which worked for 6 months, until I fell off the wagon, so to speak. My parents quit cold turkey, but I highly doubt I would be successful with that method.

I’ve set quit dates and seen them fly by on the calendar. I’ve thrown out cartons of cigarettes to quit, only to wind up bumming smokes off friends, before running to the store to buy a new stash. I’ve consumed gallons upon gallons of water, to try to flush the nicotine from my system. I’ve cut drinking straws in half, to replicate the act of smoking, hoping to trick my brain in vain.

So after 20 years, what hope is left for me? How can I break the bond between nicotine and me? I’ve made the conscious decision and recognize the need to quit now. As a physical and psychological addiction, smoking has had its grip on me for far too long. Here are my latest steps:

1. Emptied ashtrays in the house, to remove any smell or evidence of smoking.

2. Left my cigarettes in the car, so if I really want one, I’ll need to trek down the stairs and outside to feed my habit. Not fun in the winter months.

3. When I crave a smoke, I play a little mind game…I’ll time how long I can wait before having a smoke. Then I’ll challenge myself to increase that time limit for the next cigarette.

4. I’ve changed certain situations to avoid having a cigarette. For example, the after dinner cigarette is replaced with ice cream.

Here’s what I’ve learned. Only YOU can determine when the time is right to quit smoking. You can calculate how much money has been spent on buying cigarettes, consider the health consequences, the social impact and more, but if you are not physically and mentally ready to quit, you’ll never succeed.

The Great American Smoke Out is November 20th. Take the day to plan your attack against smoking. There are many resources available to you, both in the real world and the virtual one. Take the Smokeout Challenge or visit http://www.cancer.org for more information.

Holiday Program Through the Years

20th Anniversary Feature Article

As the seasons change and fall is in the air, we at HOLDCOM look forward to the holiday season and one of our time-honored rituals, as traditional as eggnog, mistletoe, and Jack Frost nipping at your nose (unless you live in Florida or Arizona). Yes, it's time for “Holiday Message-On-Hold Programs”. In its simplest form, a Holiday Message-On-Hold Program is your regular Message-On-Hold program remixed with holiday music and seasonal greetings. But that’s just the beginning of the story. The Holiday Message-On-Hold program is the most efficient and cost-effective way to wish your customers good will and good wishes during the holiday season. More dynamic than mailing a greeting card, the holiday program literally speaks to individual callers and puts them in the holiday spirit and a positive mood; a mood that’s good for business and life. And so it is at this time of year, when we prepare to look forward, that we take a moment to look back and remember some fond moments of years past and how this popular program came to be a holiday marketing staple.

Some 20 years ago, the first holiday program was a byproduct of our most ambitious clients’ diligence in keeping their Message-On-Hold program content in alignment with their other marketing and customer service initiatives. When the holidays approached, the holiday decorations would appear and the holiday promotions would be launched. So too would their Message-On-Hold program reflect the cheer and business direction of the season. These clients would rave about the impact their holiday on hold programs garnered and the positive feedback they received from their clients. Always looking for opportunities to serve all of our valued clients better, our marketing department rolled up their sleeves to create a convenient way for all of our clients to benefit from this holiday marketing gem. The Special Holiday Program (and the Super Special Holiday Program) was born.

Over the years, an eclectic and varied cast of characters has been recruited to promote our holiday programs. Snowy the Snowman was locked in a specially refrigerated studio to record your programs. Jacque the Chef stayed in the kitchen from October to December to “Mix Up the Right Recipe for the Holiday.” And Tom the Turkey survived Thanksgiving to challenge our clients, proclaiming, “Don’t be a Turkey This Holiday Season. Wish your Callers Happy Holidays”. But by far the most colorful, interesting, and effective holiday program “salesman” has been the curmudgeonly character of Scrooge, who good naturedly taunted our customers with the somewhat irresistible declaration, “Don’t Be a Scrooge This Holiday Season. Wish Your Past, Present, and Future Clients a Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.” Even the hardest-hearted, budget-shrunken tightwad turned to Santa-mush beneath that gauntlet.

So this year as you lug down heavy boxes of decorations and freeze your fingers hanging lights and wreaths about your home, or as you fight for parking spots at your local mall and set your alarm for special early bird sales, you can rest peacefully at the end of the day knowing that you’ve put your clients first on your list and given them a gift that will last longer than fruit cake and candy canes. You can rest peacefully, that is, if you click on Holdcom Holiday Program and purchase one of our Special Holiday Message-On-Hold Programs and start wishing everyone on your list holiday wishes every time they call. Or contact cr@holdcom.com for more information. Scrooge will thank you and you don’t want to get on his bad side. Happy Holidays!

Client of the Month: Big Apple Car

Diana Clemente, President of Big Apple Car
Top

As HOLDCOM celebrates its 20th Anniversary, it’s only fitting to recognize some of our clients who have embraced our services from the beginning. Such is the case with The Holdcom Voice’s November 2008 Client of the Month: Big Apple Car – a loyal customer since 1989!

Since 1983, passengers have depended upon Big Apple Car to transport them to their destination in a safe, comfortable, and timely fashion. As the only New York State- and New York City- certified Women-Owned Businesses in the black car industry, Big Apple Car also provides specialized services through three separate divisions: VIP Gold, which provides upscale, "umbrella, red carpet" ground transportation service; Goldstar Transportation, which serves the needs of their Asian clientele`, and Echelon, the "green" division, which offers fuel-efficient, luxury-chauffeured transportation in Lexus hybrid vehicles and - as a first in the black car industry - Lincoln Town Cars fueled by compressed natural gas.

Nineteen years ago, Big Apple Car decided to use their telephone hold-time to communicate with their clients to promote their services while keeping them on the line. Since their very first message, the company has continued to keep their content fresh and informative with regularly scheduled updates of their Message-On-Hold programs. Recently, they decided that a portion of their On-Hold Greeting would be voiced by Diana Clemente, company President. So one weekday morning she visited Holdcom’s recording studio for her session. “This is a great way to show our clients that commitment comes from all levels, and we are grateful for the assistance Holdcom provided in making this recording,” explains Diana. “Indeed,” she continued, “we are very pleased with every aspect of customer service we receive from Holdcom; everyone has been so friendly and helpful, especially Vito, whom we would like to especially thank.”

A professionally recorded On-Hold greeting allows Big Apple Car to make the best possible first impression when call volume is too heavy for a live operator to immediately greet the customer. The inserts also allow the company to introduce new services and convey important information to customers while they are waiting on hold.

Throughout their years of service, Diana and Big Apple Car have been proud recipients of numerous awards and honors, including a ranking as one of the Top 25 "NY Area's Largest Women-Owned Companies" by Crain's New York Business every year since 2002. But Diana emphasizes that the loyalty of her clients and the commitment of her team are the greatest rewards of all. She was pleased to note that Big Apple Car recently honored over 40 employees and drivers who have given 20 or more years of service to Big Apple Car. Congratulations Big Apple Car!

Globalizing Your Brand for Foreign Audiences

HOLDCOM recently completed an interesting project for a major bio-pharmaceutical company that required multi-lingual audio production for a video presentation. With offices and markets in numerous countries, our client needed to “globalize” their existing corporate video, which featured employee interviews, testimonials and a speech by their CEO...all in English. After considering several language options, they decided to start with a Japanese version of the presentation, using a format known as “U.N. style” (United Nations). “U.N. style” refers to the timing and dynamic level of the dubbed translation; there is a slight delay in positioning the Japanese voice track so the original English can still be heard faintly in the background.

Since scripts were not available, the first step involved producing a transcript of the English narrative. Timing cues were a critical component of this script, which had to be carried over into the Japanese translation to ensure accurate synchronization throughout the recording process. Holdcom’s “authentic” Japanese voice talents (male and female were required) were enlisted to record approximately 30 minutes of audio, followed by careful post-production, involving audio to video editing, mixing and assembly. Holdcom successfully combined the Japanese language recording with the original English audio and video track, and re-authored the client DVD to match the original menu screens and navigation options.

If your company or organization is interested in an effective solution to reach employees, prospective clients, and new partners on a global scale, whether for a training video, a research presentation, or an executive speech or seminar, Holdcom can meet your needs. Your multi-media project need no longer be limited to a single language, culture or country.

And, utilizing this process, Holdcom can produce a DVD with multiple, selectable languages, as well as subtitles! Contact us today to find out how we can globalize your corporate videos.

Voice Over Spotlight
Top

Irene had some fun while under the Voice Over Spotlight for her November 2008 feature. Read on with a smile…

Holdcom Voice: How did you get into voice over work?
Irene: Kicked down doors. It was tough to break in, but I was persistent, and had something to offer. Contrary to rumor, I am not a stalker. I was never convicted of that charge.

HV: How long have you been working as a voice over?
Irene: Over 20 years. I owe it to my vanity not to get specific.

HV: What is the most exciting/interesting aspect of working as a voice over talent?
Irene: The envy of on-camera talents, who clearly wish they could work in their pajamas, too.

HV: Is there anything you’d like to share about yourself with our readers?
Irene: I teach acting at the University of Richmond. I’ve written two books of fiction and six collections of monologues. I’m an excellent parallel parker.

HV: What about career highlights… any that you’d like to mention?
Irene: I’ve played the long-suffering wife in dozens of movies and TV shows, I narrated the award-winning documentary film: In the Face of Evil: Ronald Reagan’s War in Word and Deed, I supplied the voice to a talking Mercedes Benz…and I was once yelled at by Anne Bancroft.

Imagine how much energy Irene could put behind your next recording! Sample her voice at www.holdcom.com/voices.

Eco Tips
Top

OK Holdcom Voice readers – The Eco Tip department is giving you a homework assignment. Go Green in your office by following these 3 simple tips:

-Consider how you use paper. The age of technology was supposed to make us a paperless society, but we’re far from it. Order/Buy recycled paper and use both sides as often as possible. Many companies have also added something like this to their email signatures: "Thank you for respecting the environment by not printing this email unless necessary".

-In addition to the paper we read and write on – is your company utilizing paper cups for coffee and at the water cooler ? Suggest everyone bring in their own reusable mug !

-Change your cleaning supplies to all-natural. Chemicals go down the drain and into our water supply. Many of today’s green cleaning products are, in fact, more effective then traditional chemical-laden cleaners.

-Change your light bulbs to Energy Star certified compact fluorescent lights – they use 75 percent less energy to produce the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs. Plus they last ten times longer and produce less heat!

This is undoubtedly a time when we all need to tighten our purse strings and consider how our daily lifestyles are affecting the environment. These 4 simple steps will help in both manners.

Has your office done anything unique or substantial to Go Green? The Holdcom Voice would love to feature you. Email megana@holdcom.com with the details. Consider highlighting your accomplishment in your next message-on-hold program too!

SOCAP Recap
Top

“Live from Miami – It’s SOCAP!” rejoiced Shelia Sullivan of Coty International, the sponsor behind one of the breakout sessions, “Gen Y In their Own Words,” that was also carried “live” via a phone conference. SOCAP virtually extended the conference to members who were not present via live conference calls for 2 popular topics. Both sessions were very well attended in person and on the phone.

HOLDCOM attended the SOCAP Annual Conference in Miami, Florida October 5th – 8th. Sunday morning the conference kicked off with a fantastic golf outing sponsored by Network Direct, which based on the torrential downpours on Saturday night, made it seem unlikely. From the first tee shot to the last putt, fun was had by all.

Also outstanding were the speakers, especially CEO Tony Hsieh from Zappos.com. His simple, but effective approach to excellence in customer service, driven through the culture of the organization, was inspirational. And breaking traditional presentation format, Lindsey Pollack joined him after his initial keynote address and interviewed Tony with questions that were submitted by SOCAP members prior to the conference.

Tony Hsieh, Zappos.com

The energy and excitement of the conference was evident throughout the event. SOCAP members unable to attend or participate in the conference can go on-line to check out valuable resources, data, and presentations from the conference.

If you’re interested in becoming a member or to learn more about this valuable organization, please contact Andy Begnoche` at andyb@holdcom.com or go directly to their website at www.socap.org.
